3 Peterborough Petes in the Hockey Hall of Fame

red wings hockey jerseys, Four players that honed their craft with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League, end up as honoured members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. However, one player, Wayne Gretzky, played just three games with the club.

Bob Gainey played one game for the Peterborough Petes in 1971-72 then another 52 in 1972-73. Despite the low amount of playing time in the OMJHL, Gainey was selected eighth overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. Bob was also taken seventh overall in the World Hockey Association Amateur Draft by the Minnesota Fighting Saints, but of course, he took the NHL route.

Gainey played with the Canadiens from 1973-74 until 1988-89, totalling 1160 NHL regular season games. Over that span, Bob was part of five Stanley Cup winning teams. He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the 1978-79 Stanley Cup playoffs. Over his career, Gainey was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy on four occasions as the top defensive forward.

Bob Gainey entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2008, his number 23 was retired by the Montreal Canadiens. The Peterborough Petes don\'t have a tradition of retiring jerseys but there is a banner in honour of Gainey hanging from the rafters at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Larry Murphy played two years with the Peterborough Petes, 1978-79 and 1979-80. In his first red wings hockey jerseys year with Peterborough, the team won the Memorial Cup. Murphy was taken fourth overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

Larry played in the NHL from 1980-81 to 2000-01 with the Kings, Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. Murphy was part of four Stanley Cup winning teams during his playing career, two with Pittsburgh and two with Detroit. Larry was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.

Perhaps the player most associated with the history of the Peterborough Petes, Steve Yzerman played two years with the club, 1981-82 and 1982-83. Steve was a fourth overall pick of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.

Yzerman played with red wings hockey jerseys Detroit from 1983-84 to 2005-06. In that time, he captained the Red Wings to three Stanley Cups. He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for the 1997-98 victory. Steve\'s number 19 was retired by the Detroit Red Wings in 2007 and he entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. He is currently President and red wings hockey jerseys General Manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
